Eventrate was conceived in 2001 when the originator, Shirley Thompson, took part in the Marathon des Sables,a gruelling 250 km run acros the Sahara desert. Shirley realised there was a gap in the market for a website dedicated to ultrarunners and the events they took part in, so she set up www.eventrate.com . The site is a community site where ultrarunners may post up their diaries or comments on a race, exchange training tips, buy gear and also register for a number of international extreme races.
